I know many people that grow cutting garden flowers, and earn some exciting income. My point is living a back to basics self-sufficient life has many income streams. The simple thing they do is place a sign on their property stating "FRESH CUT FLOWERS" Later I'll make a post of the savings and earnings living on a self-sufficient piece of land. Just the savings on your food bill alone will save you thousands per year. What would you do with an extra $5000.00 per year just in savings, not to mention the income from other sources you do every day. OK lets get to cutting flowers. Here are your tips.
Even though they are kept in coolers at the florist, they need to be protected from harsh cold and wind. Be sure the florist or grocery store wraps them carefully for their trip home (if you're hoping for fresh flowers, highlight this sentence and leave the paper in plain sight).
Once you get them home, recut the stems at an angle, preferably under water. Remove the bottom inch or two of each stem. Cutting under water prevents air bubbles from getting into the stems and reducing flower life. When reusing a vase, clean it carefully with soap and warm water to kill any microbes.
If the flowers came with an envelope of preservative, mix this into lukewarm water; if not, mix a tablespoon of bleach into a gallon of water. Be sure the water hasn't gone through the softener, as the salts will reduce flower life. Change the water daily, and remove any spent flowers quickly. Keep the vase away from direct sunlight and drafts. With a bit of TLC, cut flowers can last at least 10 to 14 days.
